Ken's Pages - About Ken

Ken's first recollections of gardening are working in his Dad's garden burning the winter prunings from his sixteen fruit trees. He then got interested in working on the vegetable plot with his father where one of his favourites was growing large cabbages. Whilst still at school Ken got a part time job at Chigwell Nursery where all his spare moments were spent. He was taught the rudiments of digging by the late John Vincent and business partner Roy Warner whose daughter now runs Chigwell Nursery. Ken will never forget Roy insisting on washing and sweeping down the paths in readiness for the public on Sunday mornings. On completion of his schooling Ken joined London Parks as an apprentice, gaining a wide experience of work. This included bowling greens to football pitches, to building the Henry Moore Garden at Kenwood House, and not forgetting having the opportunity of planting some superb bedding plant schemes in London's central parks. He set up his company in 1966 maintaining and landscaping gardens in and around the Chigwell area. In 1977 with his wife Vivienne, he continued to increase his business from their premises in Abridge, offering a total service of designing and building gardens to full garden maintainance. In 2006 they moved to their current location in Epping enabling them to expand their services with branches in mid Sussex and Suffolk, but being an Essex boy Ken still keeps his Head Office in Essex.

Ken has been giving gardening advice on BBC Essex for over 20 years, and has had his own programme since 1992. He has broadcast from all the major gardening events across the country including Chelsea Flower Show, Hampton Court and Gardeners World Live, as well as attending local events in Essex. His two hour programme on Saturdays from 9-11 includes discussion not just about gardening where he and his experts answer the listeners gardening problems, but also regarding locally grown food, the environment and recycling, all subjects very close to his heart.

In October 2008 as the former President of the Horticultural Trades Association (HTA), Ken was presented with the Pearson Memorial Medal at the HTA Garden Industry Leaders' Conference dinner held on 21st October at the Crown Plaza Hotel in London.

In 2008 Ken was invited to be on the board of trustees for the charity Perennial (Gardeners' Royal Benevolent Society) which continues to help horticulturalists and gardeners in need.
